¿Quién soy?

I am the second-largest rodent in South America after the ronsoco. They also know me as machetero. My thick coat is greyish brown, with white spots. I prefer to move and do my activities at night. When I eat, I usually sit on my hind legs, while holding my fruits or stems with my front legs.

¿De qué me alimento?

My diet is very varied. It consists of stems, leaves, buds, flowers, fruits, and the bark of some trees.

¿Dónde vivo?

I am a terrestrial species, but I can also climb trees without difficulty. You can find me in the montane forests of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, and Bolivia. In Peru, I live in protected natural areas in the lowland jungle and Yungas.

Para que me conozcas mejor

A very communicative rodent.

The pacaranas produce a wide variety of vocalizations( seven different sounds) to communicate with each other, especially the males that are looking for a mate.
