I am a very particular mammal. My head, back, tail, and sides of my body have ossified dermal plates, which are covered with a hard epidermis, giving the appearance of armor. My ears are large and dark, while my legs are short, strong, and well adapted for digging. My sense of smell is much more developed than my vision.

My diet consists primarily of a wide variety of insects; my strong specialized claws help me catch them. I can also eat fruits, nuts, small invertebrates, and carrion.

I can live in a wide variety of forest and savanna habitats. You can find me from the United States to Argentina.

Attention, danger!
When threatened, we can jump considerable distances and quickly hide in burrows. If there is no place to hide, we can arch our back to feeling protected, but we cannot fully roll up as other species of armadillos do.
