I am a medium-sized land tortoise. My shell is usually black with scales with orange, reddish, or yellow central spots. The males of my species are larger, heavier, with longer tails and a concave plastron. I am a strictly terrestrial tortoise, with diurnal habits and mainly solitary.

I am an opportunistic species; my diet includes fruits, seeds, leaves, flowers, fungi, invertebrates, small vertebrates, and carrion.

I live in tropical rainforests, dry forests, temperate forests, and savanna areas. I like humid and forest habitats. The distribution of my species is restricted to South America, from Panama to Argentina.
