I am a medium-sized lizard. My head is robust and my limbs are short. My back is reddish with irregular spots and dark transverse bands. My tail is usually larger than the rest of my body. I like living in caves. I am very active during spring and summer and hibernate in the other months.

My diet is omnivorous; it consists of birds, small mammals, insects, mollusks, fish, amphibians, and fruits.
